Purchasing quality tools can be a drain on the wallet especially if you are new to woodworking. If you are money strapped because you can’t afford the best new brands on the market I have the solution for you…”reconditioned power tools“.
What’s A Reconditioned Power Tool?
A reconditioned power tool is one that has been sold, slightly used and then returned to the manufacturer for reconditioning. Then the tool goes through a process of reconditioning, cleaning and repairing, and then put back on the market for resale. In most cases a certified technician will make sure the tool is working properly before returning it to market. Once these reach the market again they can be purchased for a fraction of what the new tool would of cost.
Many manufactures will offer a one year warranty as well as a thirty day money back guarantee when you buy their reconditioned power tools. You end up getting a great tool with a good warranty for way less than you would have paid originally.
The drawback to purchasing reconditioned power tools is that not all of the products in a power tool line will be available and once in a while you will buy a lemon but if they offer a good warranty then this should be no problem.
I am finding that most manufacturers offer reconditioned items for just about every tool they make. Some companies you may want to look at are:
How can you tell the tool is any good before you buy? This is what I do:
1. Head on over to Amazon.com and select the “Tools and Home Improvement” category.
2. In the search box type “reconditioned power tools” and click “Go”. You can also type in a specific tool like “reconditioned circular saw” and get specific results.
3. Next, on the right side of the page you will see another box labeled “Sort by”. In the drop down menu select “Bestselling”.
4. Under each product you should see some gold stars. If they are there that means someone has written a review for that product. Click on those gold stars and read the reviews. This will give you a good idea of what other people think who have already purchased the product.
I do this all the time when I am researching a product to buy. It is also best to read 8 to 10 reviews of that particular product. The more reviews the better.
Reconditioned power tools will save you a bunch of money and by using the research method I described you can save time on shopping.

You can find charts online that tell you how much air any given tool will use.
Usually the deciding factor is how heavy it is and how often do you have to move it. The 2 gallon unit is probably lighter and easier to move around.

Answer by Warren914 There are very good deals to be found in used compressors. I have a 30 year old Sears compressor which uses an oil type pump and 2hp electric motor and has a 17 gallon tank. I paid only $ 100 for it. It was in near mint condition and appears to never have been used.
I found it on Kijiji, but you may also find a good used compressor in your local newspaper classified section or even on eBay if you find someone local.

Some of the inexpensive “hobby” guns use less air so If you are painting wood or crafts and can afford to delay while waiting for your compressor to catch up, no problem. But if you are putting a Kandy Apple lacquer paint job on your hot rod you should get another compressor.

that is what your looking for in a good compressor.
Answer by woodtick314 PSI doesn’t make a lot of difference for compressors. Most will give you over 100, which is more than adequate to run most tools. A much more important number is SCFM, or standard cubic feet per minute. Each tool has a minimum SCFM requirement, and if your compressor does not meet that minimum, your compressor will cycle constantly and burn out quickly. An impact wrench, or air sander, will require a much higher number than a finish nailer. Hope this helps.
